UX: Dropbox Delete Feature

This was a student project for a User Experience Fundamentals Bootcamp, with the Interactive Design Foundation. In this course, the cohort learned the basics of User Experience Design by creating a Capstone Project.

Christina’s chosen project was an evaluation of Dropbox’s Delete Feature. Her personal frustration with Dropbox’s delete feature led her to question user pain points, research, prototype solutions, test, and identify further questions for exploration.

Below are her evaluation process and findings. Her key takeaway was that cloud storage users rarely delete files. This is because of:

  • Avoidance (of a pain point)

  • Accumulating files is more efficient

  • No motivation to delete files

  • Emotional attachment (i.e. photos)

Her solution exploration focused on:

  • Removing pain points with more
intuitive IA

  • Creating motivation to delete files

  • Keeping safeguards against file loss

Additional points of curiousity and questions that arose:

  • How might we explore intelligent nudges and user motivation?

  • Can changing the UI affect emotional attachment to photos and videos?

  • How is Dropbox thinking about product development? Are they evolving their product from “cloud storage” to “smart workspace”?
